Design Concepts

Albert EinsteinDesign4Services draws on a range of design theories, or concepts.  This conceptual framework is very important, providing the bedrock for the practical methods and techniques that follow.

As concepts, their initial purpose is to help you to better understand your organisation and its setting.  The intention is that on reading, it changes the way you think about your organisation – how it operates, the relationships and interactions between the various parts, and the questions you ask.

Now, some people struggle with the application of theory to business practice.  They are dismissive, preferring to rely on their own opinion and experiences.  But experience without theory is meaningless.  It is the theory that provides the basis for learning – as well expressed by Deming’s wise words opposite.

Wise Words

Without theory, experience has no meaning. Without theory, one has no questions to ask. Hence without theory there is no learning.
